South Korea's President Promises Support for Daegu as Hub City for 'Robots, Mobility, AI, Digital Industry'
The following is the full speech by President Yoon Seok-yeol of the Republic of Korea on March 4, 2024, at the 16th People's Livelihood Debate with the People, on Daegu, a city rising high with cutting-edge new industries.
"The government will boldly support Daegu's revolutionary change." Every time I come to Daegu, I look back on the history of prosperity we have walked. Daegu has played a big role in the development of the Republic of Korea, but it is currently facing many difficulties. In order for Daegu to make a new leap forward, it must innovate its old industrial structure and definitely improve its old transportation infrastructure.
The government will provide bold support so that revolutionary changes can occur in Daegu. First, we will push forward the construction of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport without a hitch and make it a catalyst for innovation in Daegu’s transportation network. In addition, we will redraw Daegu’s industrial map centered on robots and future mobility industries, and support Daegu to make a great leap forward as an AI and big data R&D base.
First, we will invest 200 billion won in the national robot test field in Dalseong-gun, which passed the preliminary test in August last year. Based on the machinery, metal, and parts industries that Daegu has traditionally excelled in, robots and future mobility will lead Daegu’s industry. We will push forward the construction of the test field without a hitch so that robot-related companies can conveniently develop and demonstrate at the same time in Daegu.
We will also develop Susung Alpha City into a national digital innovation district and make it a key R&D base leading the convergence of manufacturing and digital. The government will focus on providing support so that large-scale R&D projects related to AI can be studied at the SK Susung Alpha City AI Data Center, which is scheduled to be built at a scale of 800 billion won. We will actively engage excellent researchers and companies from home and abroad in international joint research to open the door to the development of Daegu’s cutting-edge industries. Daegu’s main industries will also become highly competitive by converging with cutting-edge digital technologies such as AI and big data. The southwestern part of Daegu will be developed into a base for the robot and mobility industries, and the eastern part of Daegu into an AI and digital industry base.
