Despite limited resources and a small domestic market, South Korea has grown into a major global manufacturing and exporting nation based on its semiconductor, automobile, battery, shipbuilding, steel, biotechnology, defense, and digital industries.
However, population decline, super-aging, concentration in the capital area, dependence on energy imports, and the productivity gap between small and medium-sized enterprises and regional industries are long-term growth constraints.
South Korea's next growth strategy must shift the existing large-enterprise-centered export model to connecting AI, manufacturing data, SMEs, and regional industries with overseas order demand.
Final evaluation
While South Korea is a nation with world-class manufacturing capabilities, moving forward, it must go beyond the ability to produce high-quality products to become a country that identifies global demand, digitizes the capabilities of regional and SMEs, and connects them to actual contracts.
